China NMPA accepts United Laboratories semaglutide filing for weight loss

China's drug regulator has taken in Zhuhai United Biopharmaceutical's weight management filing for semaglutide, and Hong Kong shares rose as much as 6%. It is a review, not an approval, and no date, price or trial data were given.

The short of itChina's NMPA has accepted for review a weight management marketing application for semaglutide filed by United Laboratories' Zhuhai subsidiary, and the Hong Kong listed shares rose as much as 6%.

China's National Medical Products Administration has accepted a marketing application for the weight management use of the United Laboratories semaglutide injection, the Hong Kong listed drugmaker said on 4 November 2026. The filing came from its wholly owned unit Zhuhai United Biopharmaceutical and now enters review, which is not an approval. Shares in the company rose as much as 6% the next morning. The reporting gave no review timeline, no price and no trial data, and China's race to copy semaglutide is already crowded.

What the NMPA accepted from Zhuhai

According to the company's announcement, as reported by BigGo Finance on 5 November, the NMPA took in the weight management filing under five acceptance numbers, CXSS2600179 through CXSS2600183. The applicant is Zhuhai United Biopharmaceutical, a wholly owned subsidiary of The United Laboratories International Holdings. Acceptance is the first formal step of NMPA marketing registration: the agency has taken the dossier in for technical review, but it has not yet judged the data. The reporting does not explain why the filing carries five numbers, and it gives no detail on strengths or pen formats. The company describes the United Laboratories semaglutide product as a long acting recombinant human GLP-1 analogue given by injection under the skin once a week.

The company lists four clinical uses for the medicine. They are blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes, long term weight management in people with obesity or overweight, lower risk of major cardiovascular events in that same group, and treatment of metabolic dysfunction associated steatohepatitis, known as MASH, with moderate to severe liver fibrosis. The announcement as reported does not make clear which of these uses the new dossier covers beyond weight management. United Laboratories said the drug works by curbing appetite, slowing stomach emptying and shifting energy metabolism, and that it improves liver tissue. Those statements describe how semaglutide acts in general. They are not results from the company's own trials, which were not described in the coverage this desk checked.

Why United Laboratories shares rose in Hong Kong

The market moved before any regulator did. On 5 November, United Laboratories shares climbed as much as 6% in early Hong Kong trading and stood 5.66% higher at HK$7.745 when BigGo Finance filed its report, with turnover of about HK$24.14 million. The same report said trading in weight loss concept stocks had heated up in recent weeks and that investors remain highly sensitive to obesity drug headlines. A TipRanks summary of the filing, posted late on 4 November, carried the same core fact: China has accepted the weight management application. Neither source reported a company forecast for sales, market share or launch timing, and this desk has not seen one from the company itself.

Acceptance opens the review but proves nothing yet, and BigGo Finance itself noted that approval and launch remain a considerable time away.

The weight filing builds on an earlier one. United Laboratories said it filed for marketing registration of semaglutide for type 2 diabetes in January 2025 and that the NMPA accepted that application as well. No decision on the diabetes filing was reported in the coverage we checked. With the new filing, the company said, the product's indication coverage is effectively complete, which it expects to help a wider group of patients. It describes its GLP-1 strategy as running innovative drugs and biosimilars in parallel, and it said it will keep investing in research to create returns for shareholders. Acceptance opens the review but proves nothing yet, and BigGo Finance itself noted that approval and launch remain a considerable time away.

Semaglutide biosimilar China race is already crowded

China is one of the busiest markets for semaglutide copies. In January this desk counted more than ten Chinese companies that had applied for, or were testing, versions of the drug as the main local patent neared its end. Our later patent expiry map found that the patent has lapsed, but that regulatory data protection holds copies back until April 2027. That date matters for any semaglutide biosimilar China approval, including the United Laboratories semaglutide filing, although the company announcement as reported does not mention data protection or say when it expects a decision. The originator product, made by Novo Nordisk, already holds what BigGo Finance called a first mover advantage in weight management.

When copies do reach patients, BigGo Finance expects price competition and pressure on sales channels to rise together, since several makers will chase the same buyers. That is the outlet's analysis, not a company statement. United Laboratories also has to make the drug at scale. Semaglutide is a recombinant peptide, and how semaglutide is made shapes cost and capacity, since the originator grows the backbone in yeast and then finishes it with chemistry. The company did not disclose a production site, capacity figure or supply plan in the reporting we checked. BigGo Finance said success will depend on review progress, capacity planning and building marketing channels, three areas where public detail is thin for now.

What to watch after NMPA acceptance

For patients and doctors in China, nothing changes yet. Acceptance gives no right to sell, and the reporting includes no review clock, no expected approval date and no planned price. It also gives no clinical trial results for the weight indication, so readers cannot yet compare the United Laboratories semaglutide injection with the originator on weight loss, side effects or device. An approval, when it comes, would be published by the regulator, and that notice, not the stock price, will be the first firm sign of progress. Until then, the most solid facts are the acceptance numbers, the applicant and the earlier diabetes filing, all of which come from the company's own announcement.

Three questions will decide how much this filing matters. First, whether the NMPA rules on the diabetes and weight applications together or apart, and how either timing lines up with the April 2027 data protection date. Second, what price United Laboratories sets against the originator and the many local rivals preparing their own versions of GLP-1 weight loss drugs. Third, whether the company names a plant and a capacity able to supply a weekly injection to a large population. Anyone weighing these medicines should rely on approved products prescribed through legitimate channels, because unapproved or gray market semaglutide carries a real risk of fakes, as recent seizures in other markets have shown.

Conclusion

China's acceptance of the United Laboratories semaglutide filing for weight management is a real regulatory step, but an early one. The company now holds two accepted semaglutide applications, for diabetes and for weight, and its Hong Kong shares rose on the news. What is missing matters just as much: no approval date, no price, no published trial data and no plant detail. The next firm news will come from the NMPA, and this desk will report it when it does.

Why it matters in China

China has a crowded queue of local semaglutide copies. United Laboratories now has accepted filings for both diabetes and weight management, which would let it compete across the main uses once approved. Acceptance is only the start of review, and data protection is reported to hold copies back until April 2027.

What to watch

Whether and when the NMPA approves the diabetes and weight filings, how that timing fits the April 2027 data protection date, what price United Laboratories sets, and whether it names a plant and capacity.
