In one lineThe largest US plant plan yet from a GLP-1 maker, announced before the sites were even chosen.
What was announced
Lilly said it would build four new manufacturing sites in the United States at a cost of about $27 billion. Three would make active pharmaceutical ingredient; one would make injectable medicines.
The total
With earlier projects, Lilly said its US manufacturing commitments since 2020 would reach about $50 billion.
Where
The locations were not named on the day. Lilly said it would announce them later in 2025 and expected the plants to start production within about five years.
The setting
The announcement came as the new US government talked about tariffs on imported medicines. Lilly's chief executive spoke about building at home, and the company asked for tax and permitting changes that would help.
The caveat
Unnamed sites and a five-year horizon make this a plan with many moving parts. Some of the money will go to non-peptide medicines.
What it changes for supply
Three of the four sites are for active ingredient. If built, they would move more of the peptide and small-molecule chemistry onto US soil.
Still open
Where the plants go (to be named later), and how much of the plan depends on trade policy.
