Lilly picks Alzey, Germany, for a $2.5 billion injectables plant

Lilly chose a town in Germany's wine country for its first big new plant in continental Europe in years, aimed at injectable medicines.

In one linePens for European patients may come from a German plant instead of crossing the Atlantic.

What was announced

Lilly said it would build a manufacturing site in Alzey, in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, for about $2.5 billion. The plant is meant to make injectable medicines and the devices that deliver them.

Why Germany

Lilly said the site would serve Europe and other markets. Germany offered land, skilled workers and fast access to EU countries. State and federal officials attended the announcement.

Jobs and timing

About 1,000 jobs were expected. Lilly said it planned to start production in 2027.

What it will make

Lilly did not name a single product. At the time, its fastest-growing injected medicines were tirzepatide for diabetes and weight, and newer drugs in development.

The caveat

Like most plant announcements, the figure is a planned total over several years.

What it changes for supply

A European filling site shortens the route to European markets and spreads risk away from US-only finishing.

Still open

Whether the 2027 start holds and which products are filled first.
